From there, it’s up to LA and the airport, then onto Route 66 to Ballarat, where Wyatt symbolically divests himself of his watch. On the whole it was filmed where it’s set, though the first scene, where Billy (Dennis Hopper) and Wyatt (Peter Fonda) score their cocaine stash, is not in Mexico but in El Prado, New Mexico. One of the great expressions of the counter-culture, Easy Rider remains the most referenced and one of the best road movies ever. From here, aided by a snake-hunter, a hippy and a nude motorcycling girl, he’s on his way to Cisco – supposedly in California, but actually in the ghost-town of the same name back in Utah, about midway between Rifle and Huntsville. He then races through the town of Austin, 60 miles due north, and heads into the desert, around Humboldt Salt Marsh. The cops pull up at the Nevada border, after which there’s a big geographical jump to the gas station where the pretty attendant sends him into a flashback, just outside Carvers, NV, about halfway across the state.

He’s briefly back on the I-70 after some advanced lane-changing but turns off again to avoid a roadblock in Rifle and we next see him in Utah, racing with a Jaguar driver over a bridge on Muddy Creek, just north of Hanksville. He starts in Denver, scoring from Dan’s Corner Tavern on Brighton Boulevard, then takes Interstate 70 west and turning off at No Name (a real place, amazingly).

You can almost follow the course of tortured driver Kowalski (Barry Newman) and the souped-up Dodge Challenger he’s delivering from Colorado to California, on a diet of pills and not a lot else. The missing link between Easy Rider and The Dukes of Hazzard, this cross-country trip aims for existential meaning via all-action car-chase. After that, it’s on to familiar ground, Caesars Palace in Las Vegas for the high-roller suite, back to LA and finally home to Walbrook, with some big lessons learned all round. For open country, they move to Oklahoma: El Reno, near Oklahoma City, supplied the Texan motel, gas station and farmhouse where Raymond catches up on TV. From here, they’re supposedly driving cross-country but really stay in the region: their first hotel is the Vernon Manor on Oak Street the café where Raymond counts toothpicks is Pompilio’s in Newport just over the river and the airport where they can’t find a Qantas flight is Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International. While we first see Charlie Babbitt (Cruise) in Los Angeles, we’re soon in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he visits his childhood home and the institution where he’s reunited with long-lost brother Raymond (Hoffman) – ‘Walbrook’ is in fact St Anne Convent in Melbourne, Kentucky, further south. It’s also a chance to glimpse an unsung part of the USA.
